Winter light across the Highlands and Islands
Our 9 local town pages in the Highlands and Islands run from Fort William in the south to Lerwick in the north. On the shortest day, daylight ranges from about 5 h 49 min in Lerwick to 6 h 45 min in Fort William, and the midday sun reaches between 6° and 10°.
In Inverness, winter days are short and the sun stays low, around 9° at noon in late December. Triple glazing suits a climate like this; solar-control glass is rarely needed except on large panes facing south or west.

Rules in Scotland
The rules for replacement windows in Scotland are set by the Building Standards Technical Handbook (Domestic), section 6: 1.6 W/m²K. Replacing a window or door, frame and all, does not need a building warrant, but the work must still meet the building standards.
Planning: Since May 2024, replacement windows on houses are widely permitted development, including in many conservation areas, with front elevations expected to match the existing closely; your council tells you if prior notification applies. Flats outside conservation areas generally need permission only if the opening size changes. Listed buildings need listed building consent.
How it works
The surveyor measures every opening, checks ventilation, escape windows and safety-glass zones, and talks through styles. Your written quote lists each item with its glass build-up and U-value, and the price is fixed for that specification.
- Every opening measured, including escape and vent needs
- Frames rated for the weight of triple glass
- Old windows removed and taken away
- Each opening closed up the same day
