Rules in Scotland

Scotland sets replacement door limits through the Building Standards Technical Handbook (Domestic), section 6: 1.6 W/m²K. Replacing a door or window, frame and all, does not need a building warrant, but the work must still meet the building standards.

Planning: A replacement door on a house that looks similar to the existing one is generally permitted development; check with your council for flats and conservation areas, and listed buildings need listed building consent.

How it works

After the free survey you get a written quote naming the frame system, the glass build-up and the whole-window U-value for every item. Windows are made to order, then fitted, sealed and made good, one opening at a time.

  • Every opening measured, including escape and vent needs
  • Frames rated for the weight of triple glass
  • Old windows removed and taken away
  • Each opening closed up the same day

Questions

Are French doors secure?

Modern French doors lock at multiple points on both leaves. We specify PAS 24 tested doorsets where available.

Do I need planning permission?

Replacing an existing door on a house is normally permitted development. Making a new opening is a structural change that may need approval; flats and listed buildings have their own rules.

Can French doors be triple glazed in uPVC?

Yes, many uPVC door systems take triple units; the frame depth is checked on survey.

Do you cover all of the Highlands and Islands?

We arrange surveys and fitting across the Highlands and Islands. Island and remote districts are by arrangement, with travel and access costs shown separately on your quote.
