Glass and upgrades

Laminated security triple glazing

Most break-ins through windows target the lock or the glass. Laminated glass holds together when struck, which slows an intruder down and keeps the hole small. It also meets safety-glazing rules in low-level zones and cuts noise. We fit it as the inner or outer pane of the triple unit, depending on the risk.

Summary

Laminated security triple glazing uses a pane made of two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer, so it cracks but stays in place when hit. Paired with multi-point locks and a PAS 24 tested window or doorset, it makes windows much harder to break through.

Think twice if

  • Upper windows with no access, where standard glass is fine
  • Escape windows, which still have to open easily from inside

  • Key-locking handles
  • Restrictors
  • Anti-snap cylinders on doors
  • Matching composite doors

Part Q and replacement windows

Security standards for doors and windows apply to new homes (Approved Document Q in England and Wales, standard 4.13 in Scotland). For replacement windows there is no legal security standard, but specifying PAS 24 tested products gives the same level of protection, and many insurers look for it.

Laminated glass for safety too

Laminated panes also count as safety glass, so they satisfy Approved Document K in low-level zones and next to doors.

Questions about security glazing

Is laminated glass the same as toughened?

No. Toughened glass shatters into small blunt pieces; laminated glass cracks but stays in one sheet. Both are safety glass; laminated is better for security.

What does PAS 24 mean?

PAS 24 is a British test standard for the security of doors and windows against attack. We specify products tested to it.

Do I have to have security glass?

Not for replacements, but it is worth it on ground-floor and easy-access windows.

Does laminated glass reduce noise?

Yes, somewhat. Acoustic laminated interlayers reduce it further.
