The best energy performance of any window type: no opening gaps. A fixed or picture window does not open; it is one large pane in a slim frame, used to frame a view or bring in light.

In Penzance, midday sun in late December sits around 16° high, with roughly 8 h 03 min of daylight. For windows facing north or shaded by neighbours, cutting heat loss matters more than solar gain; on open south-facing glass, ask about a higher solar-gain unit.

Rules for fixed and picture windows in England
In England, replacement windows must meet 1.4 W/m²K, or a Window Energy Rating of band B or better. Replacement windows are a controlled fitting. A competent person scheme installer (such as FENSA or Certass) self-certifies the work and notifies the council within 30 days; otherwise a building control body approves it.
Before ordering: Replacing windows on a house is normally permitted development if the new ones look similar. New upper-floor windows in a side wall must be obscure glazed and fixed, or open only above 1.7 m. Flats and maisonettes have no householder permitted development rights, so a change that alters their appearance needs planning permission. An Article 4 direction in a conservation area may mean permission is needed, and listed buildings need listed building consent.
How it works
We start with a survey, not a sales pitch: measurements, the structure above any bays, trickle-vent needs and escape windows. The quote that follows fixes the price, and anything unexpected on the day is agreed with you first.
- Free survey and a written quote fixed for the specification
- Glass build-up and whole-window U-value on every quote
- Written handover pack at the end of the job
- Guarantees on frames, units and fitting in writing
Questions from Penzance
Do fixed windows need trickle vents?
The room still needs ventilation. If the fixed window replaces one with vents, ventilation must be provided another way, for example a vented frame or an adjacent opener.
Is a picture window worth triple glazing?
Big panes lose a lot of heat and can feel cold to sit near. Triple glazing keeps the inner pane warmer, which makes the space by the window more comfortable.
How long does it take to get triple glazed fixed and picture windows fitted in Penzance?
After the survey, typical manufacture time is 4 to 8 weeks, and most homes are fitted in 1 to 4 days.
Do you fit triple glazed fixed and picture windows in Penzance?
Yes. We arrange surveys and fitting in Penzance and across Cornwall. Send your postcode and the windows or doors you want replaced, and we will book a free survey.
