Cotswold stone cottage with cream heritage-style casement windows in a conservation village

Heritage-style frames and plain advice on consents. In a conservation area, replacing windows on a house is often permitted development if the new windows look similar to the old ones, but councils can remove those rights with an Article 4 direction.

Winter light and glass choice in Inverness

In Inverness, midday sun in late December sits around 9° high, with roughly 6 h 35 min of daylight. For windows facing north or shaded by neighbours, cutting heat loss matters more than solar gain; on open south-facing glass, ask about a higher solar-gain unit.

Rules for period homes and conservation areas in Scotland

The rules for replacement windows in Scotland are set by the Building Standards Technical Handbook (Domestic), section 6: 1.6 W/m²K. Replacing a window or door, frame and all, does not need a building warrant, but the work must still meet the building standards.

Planning: Since May 2024, replacement windows on houses are widely permitted development, including in many conservation areas, with front elevations expected to match the existing closely; your council tells you if prior notification applies. Flats outside conservation areas generally need permission only if the opening size changes. Listed buildings need listed building consent.

How it works

You will know exactly what you are buying: the quote states the unit build-up, frame, finish, fitting work and how Building Regulations compliance is handled. On fitting day each opening is replaced and closed up before the team moves on.

  • Free survey and a written quote fixed for the specification
  • Glass build-up and whole-window U-value on every quote
  • Written handover pack at the end of the job
  • Guarantees on frames, units and fitting in writing

Questions from Inverness

Will heritage-style frames look chunky with triple glass?

They can if the sections are too slim for a full triple unit. We will show you the frame sizes and, if needed, offer a slim high-performance unit instead.

Can I put triple glazing in a listed building?

Usually not as a replacement. Listed building consent is needed and is often refused for original windows. Secondary glazing is the common alternative.

How long does it take to get period-style triple glazing fitted in Inverness?

After the survey, typical manufacture time is 6 to 10 weeks, and most homes are fitted in 1 to 4 days.

Do you fit period-style triple glazing in Inverness?

Yes. We arrange surveys and fitting in Inverness and across the Highlands and Islands. Send your postcode and the windows or doors you want replaced, and we will book a free survey.
