Winter light and glass choice in Cardiff
On the shortest day, Cardiff gets about 7 h 50 min of daylight and the midday sun reaches only about 15° above the horizon. Low winter sun means north-facing rooms here gain little solar heat, which is where triple glazing’s lower heat loss helps most.

Rules for bifold doors in Wales
Wales sets replacement door limits through Approved Document L for Wales (2022 edition, with 2024 amendments): 1.4 W/m²K, or a door set energy rating of band C (more than 60% glazed) or band B (other doors). Replacement external doors fall under the same energy rules as windows: a competent person scheme installer self-certifies the work, or building control approves it.
Before ordering: Householder permitted development rules do not cover flats, and councils can remove rights with Article 4 directions. Listed buildings need listed building consent. Check with your council before changing the style or material of a front door.
How it works
You will know exactly what you are buying: the quote states the unit build-up, frame, finish, fitting work and how Building Regulations compliance is handled. On fitting day each opening is replaced and closed up before the team moves on.
- Free survey and a written quote fixed for the specification
- Glass build-up and door U-value on every quote
- Written handover pack at the end of the job
- Guarantees on frames, units and fitting in writing
Questions from Cardiff
Do I need building regulations for new bifolds?
Replacing an existing door is covered by the replacement rules. A new or widened opening is structural work that needs building control approval.
Are bifolds warmer with triple glazing?
Yes. The glass is most of the door area, so triple units cut heat loss and keep the inner surface warmer.
Do I need permission for triple glazed bifold doors in Cardiff?
In Wales, householder rules do not cover flats, councils can use Article 4 directions, and listed buildings need consent. Check whether your street is in a conservation area or covered by an Article 4 direction before changing the style.
How long does it take to get triple glazed bifold doors fitted in Cardiff?
After the survey, typical manufacture time is 5 to 8 weeks, and a door is usually fitted in a day.
